Laser technology with CO2 laser machines combines high technology with ecology and economy - there is no better way to mark organic fruits and vegetables for sale in retail and supermarkets. Whether for marking with the organic seal or with other product information, e.g. for brand branding or marketing campaigns.

EcoMark Natural Branding removes only a micrometre-thin layer of the fruit or vegetable skin. The CO2 laser beam stays so close to the surface that the fruits and vegetables under the peel remain fully intact. This guarantees 100 per cent shelf life. The taste is also preserved, of course. Consumers can dispose of the branding with the peel - or simply eat it. Because our branding works without additives or chemicals and therefore does not restrict health or taste.

In the meantime, EcoMark has developed the Natural Branding technology so that you can even brand or laser-mark highly sensitive citrus fruits without any problems.

A highlight of EcoMark Natural Branding is our On The Fly technology: A coordinated control software can implement practically any product labelling. Labels can be changed with a few clicks. One minute labelling apples, the next labelling courgettes - no problem. Thanks to the clever machine design and the unique EcoMark software, there are not even any significant set-up times.

Natural Branding Laser machines can be equipped with 30 W or up to 120 W laser power, depending on requirements. In addition, fast 3D cameras are installed. This enables process times of 0.1 seconds per fruit and laser, and up to 50,000 fruits can be lasered per hour.

The starting point for the development of the EcoMark Natural Branding process was a simple insight: why use packaging and thus create waste when fruit and vegetables already come with the best packaging? Nature has already equipped every fruit or vegetable shell perfectly for storage. There are basically no differences between the hard shell of a coconut and the thinner protective layer of a cucumber. Both protect the inside of the fruit from environmental influences, both provide protection from impact damage according to the growing environment, both perfectly seal the fruit on the outside from all sides.

In addition, each skin of fruit or vegetables always consists of a colouring top layer in which most of the pigments are found. Below this, there are more or less coloured layers that take over the actual protective functions. From the labelling point of view, the fruit or vegetable bowl is a perfect base for labelling. A lemon provides enough space to place an organic seal prominently and clearly visible. A banana could even accommodate a whole story with the appropriate marking device.

For a long time, the problem with these considerations was the question of how to permanently label the peel without damaging or chemically altering the fruit, and without having to resort to additional aids such as adhesives, paints or pigments.

With Natural Branding, EcoMark has found the answer. In the non-contact laser method for labelling fruit and vegetables, a CO2 laser applies a wafer-thin layer of pigment to the skin according to computer-controlled specifications. This colour removal is so precise that logos, lettering, graphics, seals or text can be immortalised in exact size and position on a fruit in a fraction of a second. Durable, more natural and safer than any other form of labelling, such as plastic packaging.

Laser marking of food is something like reverse tattooing: instead of adding colour, it is subtracted from the outermost layer of the shell. This creates a contrasting indentation that offers optimum legibility through sophisticated laser technology.

This is possible precisely because the top layer of skin always contains the highest concentration of colour pigments. The laser focuses exclusively on this layer, so that the underlying parts of the fruit or vegetable are not touched. This means that the peel always retains its full, natural protective function. No additives are needed in any of the marking steps - not to mention plastic. Afterwards, there is no need for any packaging either. Thus, organic products with the branded organic seal are clearly recognisable as such and consistently stand out ecologically and directly from the conventional products in the fruit and vegetable display.
